Pros and Cons of Remote Learning

Imagine this: your child does not have to deal with the challenges of getting to school or getting up early if they choose to participate in a program that allows them to learn remotely.

This may sound like an exciting option as it makes things more convenient for you and your child, but you should be aware that there may be academic drawbacks. Your child’s academic skills can be lost if they don’t get close supervision in school and can’t work with other students on group projects.

When it comes to dealing with a variety of tasks, children require strict guidance and control. This was especially apparent in Houston, Texas, when students returned to school physically after a state-wide lockdown. At the Duc Dinh Center, a tutoring center for academic success, we have seen the effects of remote learning first-hand and can say that the cons do not outweigh the pros. In 2022, we experienced a large influx of students in our summer tutoring program.

There are benefits and drawbacks that are associated with distance learning. Find out how hard this way of teaching your child is before you decide whether or not to keep doing it.

The Pros and Cons of Remote Learning for Kids

Here are some of the biggest pros and cons of remote learning.

Pros of Remote Learning:

  • Kids can learn at their own pace
Academic independence may be gained as a result. Education at home is best suited for kids who are capable of working independently and requiring little to no supervision. It’s possible that some kids have picked up the skill of relying on themselves to figure things out and get things done as a result of their experience with distance learning.

  • Kids can learn comfortably
Remote learning can give kids improved focus and learning retention because they are not bothered by classmates. Some students find the classroom to be an intimidating environment. They can experience feelings of inadequacy and discomfort, and as a result, they avoid participating in class discussions. Kids that struggle to focus in a traditional classroom environment may benefit from participating in distance learning.

  • Kids can learn freely
Learning remotely is not as mentally taxing or restrictive as going to school physically. It’s possible that some students will find the flexibility and freedom that come with learning remotely interesting and enjoyable. Because there is more freedom, students may learn to be self-responsible.

Cons of Remote Learning:

  • Students are not ready for higher responsibilities
The high level of self-accountability may be difficult for some students to handle, especially when they are young. Children who aren’t very adept at studying may discover that learning at home is difficult because of all the distractions.

  • Students can feel alone
There are fewer opportunities for kids to interact with one another and collaborate. One of the biggest problems with distance education is that students can’t talk to each other and their teachers in person.

  • Students are not receiving enough guidance
Children who aren’t naturally motivated to learn on their own may have a particularly difficult time learning new things remotely, staying on top of their work, and maintaining their enthusiasm.

The bottom line of remote learning

There are flaws in the system of distance learning, and only time will tell what the consequences of using this approach to education will be in the long run. There is no doubt, however, that there are possibilities for your child to grow as a student and learner and that these opportunities are available to them. If you consider things in this light and encourage your child to do the same, you could be pleasantly surprised to find that your child has adopted an optimistic attitude and a growth mindset that he or she did not have previously.
